Conflict resolution within health care is a set of processes that use communication and problem-solving skills to de-escalate and constructively resolve conflict. Mediation is a process by which an impartial third-party mediator helps to constructively resolve such conflicts. This full day workshop will explore the history and practice of interprofessional relations within health care, common causes of interprofessional conflict, and their implications for healthcare ethics. Using several clinical cases, we will describe tools that teams can use to analyze ethical questions and discuss strategies that can ensure optimal team functioning, the wellbeing of individuals, and high-quality patient care. Finally, we will utilize these tools and apply them through team roleplay exercises, exploring a variety of patient care dilemmas in order to facilitate constructive face-to-face dialogue as a team.
